Is Coffee Hurting Your Stomach?

I’m really careful in the morning when I have my first cup of coffee. When I say careful I mean making sure that I have access to a restroom if need be.

I try not to drink coffee while I’m driving and rather wait until I get to my office.  However, this isn’t all the time but it is better to be safe than sorry. Plus who wants an upset stomach early in the morning or for that matter ever.

The combination of caffeine and the acidic nature of the coffee brewing process causes the body to produce more bile in the stomach.  While caffeine can cause nausea it also stimulates the gastrointestinal tract which leads to bile build up in the guy which leads to stomach pains and can even cause diarrhea.

What to do if coffee hurts your stomach

If you’re starting to notice that coffee is causing your stomach to hurt each time you consume it here are a few things you could do to help lessen that issue.

Start by choosing a darker roast, a study has found that beans with darker roasts  have been roasted longer and at a higher temperature which means it would be less acidic when used for brewing your coffee you got this 

The next thing you could try is choosing larger coffee grounds.  similar to choosing a darker roast by having larger coffee grounds you’re not fully extracting all the acid in oils from though finer grounds thus making your coffee less acidic.

Cold brew is also less acidic so try adding that into your mix so that we can still have your coffee however with it being less acidic and not causing as much stomach issues as hot brewed coffee.   This way you still get the same great coffee taste but in a different format. 

Final Thoughts

If you want the taste and are okay with not having the caffeine try switching to a decaf for a little bit to see if this helps satisfy your cravings and eliminate any stomach issues.

Coffee has several compounds that may upset your stomach that include caffeine, coffee acids, and if your adding extra items to your coffee such as milk, cream, sugar, and sweeteners.

If you add all of these extra items to your coffee, try eliminating one at a time until you get the perfect blend where you can still enjoy the taste and not worry about taking another restroom break for the day.
